*This is not a sponsored post*

Alright, so it's been a month since our India trip, but I've been soo lazy... Jacky and I are at the half-way mark of our big journey, and it's been amazing so far. I'll try my best to make frequent blog posts, but my netbook died last week :( Which means.... I won't be able to upload photos/blog until I either get it fixed, find an Internet cafe (like now), or return home.

Anyway, the first official leg of our Asia trip began on June 29, 2011. We had a brief one-day stopover in Kuala Lumpur, but I'll talk more about it later. It was both of our first times in India, so we though it'd be wise to go with a tour. That was seriously a smart, smart decision. We booked with a company called Friends Travel Services, and they helped us arrange accommodation, transport, and guided services in New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.

We started off with a city tour of both old and new Delhi. I was really surprised at all the attention we attracted... There was constant staring and gawking. I thought that in a ginormous city like Delhi, there would obviously be many tourists and unfamiliar faces, but I guess not. After a couple of days, I got really tired of all the photos (most of the time without permission)... I felt like a total zoo animal. Well, not anyone's fault really.

Jacky and I at the India Gate. We used my tripod to take this photo, and at least 5-6 men were standing around my camera in some sort of trance... Seriously.

Us at the Lotus Temple (gorgeous!)... Same deal with the self-portrait.

Our driver took us to relatively "expensive" restaurants. Jacky and I (incorrectly) assumed that food would be cheap, but obviously there are different classes of eateries. Anyway, that was fine by us. It's always nice to know that your food is clean. I had butter chicken at least every other day... One of my favourite dishes ever!

After Delhi, we drove 6 hours to Jaipur city. The drive wasn't supposed to be so long, but traffic was horrendous. This is one of the attractions we visited, a beautiful mosque that is largely frequented by the locals.

As it was a mosque, it was very important to cover up your shoulders and everything below the knees. They gave me something to wear that looked like a kimono, very cute!

Jacky had never been on a camel before, so he was very excited to see rides being offered at nearly every tourist attraction.

I, on the other hand, was more interested in smaller, slithery animals ;) I always thought that snakes were attracted to the music, but apparently they just mimic the charmers' movements.
The following morning, we went on an elephant ride at Amber Fort and it was lovely. It was different from my experience of riding elephants in Thailand because some of the elephants in India are painted :)

Prior to our India trip, I didn't have too much experience with Indian cuisine. I was really happy to have my first taste of paneer, a fried cheese dish that is absolutely fantastic. In the evening, we drove to Agra and rested for the evening. We would be going to the Taj Mahal at sunrise the next day!

The Taj Mahal, simply put, is gorgeous. We left our hotel at about 7am, but it was still relatively busy. Apparently tripods are not allowed past the gate, but I didn't see any signs indicating that, so I spent a good 10 minutes arguing with security. I finally gave up when he showed me a teeeeny tiny sign with that as it's fine print. Lame.

Anyway, it was freakin' hot! We were boiling by the time it was 9am.. I don't think I could ever ever get used to 40+ weather. We tried to do some jump shot poses but got tired after 5 mins. Haha...

Wheee!

OMG, the McDonald's.... Hehehe. They had some cool items on their menu, like McSpicy Paneer and Chicken Maharaja Mac. Most Indians don't eat beef, so I was interested in what the McDonalds there had to offer..

Vegetarian Pizza McPuff! It tasted like a pizza pop.

On our fifth day in India, we flew to Leh Ladakh, an area in the region of Kashmir and Jammu. This province is one of the most controversial regions in India because of its conflicts with Pakistan. Leh is in the northernmost part of India, very close to Tibet. the whole area is very mountainous and beautiful, but it took a while to get used to the altitude.

Photos are prohibited at the airport runways, but being the sneaky person I am... ;) At 3500 metres (11,500 feet) above sea level, a lot of travelers suffer from acute mountain sickness (AMS). A woman from our flight fainted immediately after getting off the plane. I hoped it wouldn't be the case for us, but we both got quite sick. Nausea, lack of appetite, headaches... It really sucked.

Leh is popular place for backpackers. The region is full of culture and has an aura of mystique surrounding the whole town. We visited several monasteries and religious monuments... good way to soak in a lot of culture ;)

Leh is a town of many faiths, and it is a great example of how people can coexist peacefully despite differences in beliefs. Really lovely.

On our last day, we drove all the way up to Khardung la - the highest motorable pass in the world. In other words, the highest drive-able road... ever.

The views were amazing, but never ever again! The ride up was horrible.. At 18,000+ feet above sea level... Omg, some people can die up here.

We lived really close to the markets, and I bought a really nice pair of "alibaba" pants, as the storekeeper put it.

This is going to sound totally creepy, but the kids were soo cute! Leh is not only occupied by Indians, but also migrants from neighboring areas such as Nepal, Tibet... We got to see people of different ethnicities. Typically, I don't like to take photos of people looking directly at the camera, but upon arrival at the airport, I was told to ask for permission before taking anyone's photo.

People were very friendly and happy to pose for me :)

This kid was cute. I asked if I could take his photo (as if he understood what I meant... haha), and he immediately started sucking his thumb as a pose.. Hehe.

Cute Tibetan girl in a traditional costume :)

Overall, it was a fantastic trip. We were very grateful that we chose to do tours, because it would definitely be difficult to get around if it weren't for our awesome driver. I don't know when we will be in India again, but we'll definitely be back to check out southern India.

Next post... Singapore!

Basically, my dream is to work for the Canadian Olympic Committee. As you probably know, I'm crazy about all things Olympics. Unfortunately, it is extremely competitive to work for the COC, so I thought it would be a good investment to pursue a postgraduate degree in sports management in preparation for it.

With that said, I'm very happy to say that I'll be a candidate for the Master of Advanced Studies in Sport Administration and Technology (MSA) at AISTS in Lausanne, Switzerland. The organization is founded by the International Olympic Committee, so with hard work and the future connections I'll make at school, hopefully that will pave the way to my future with the COC. The AISTS Master's programme is only one year long, and it includes 7 months in the classroom and a mandatory 8 week internship. Living in Switzerland is going to be crazy expensive, so I'll be living at Jacky's school in Leysin and commuting to school every day. Now, all I need to do is figure out what I'll be doing from September-December! Woohoo :)

We were supposed to meet up in Beijing, but I've always wanted to go to Chengdu for the pandas, so that's what we did. We spent the entire Saturday at the Chengdu Panda Base. It's basically a huge park where researchers help study and breed the giant panda species.

There are less than 2000 pandas in the world right now, so they're super endangered. We paid700RMB per person to volunteer for the day, but it was so worth it. I'd do it again in a heartbeat... It's awesome how close you get to be with the pandas...

In order to enter the enclosure, you had to wear a protective covering to avoid passing germs into where the pandas lived.

Jacky knows I love Playboy, so he got me a pair of earrings from HK :)

Cute platform sneakers I bought for 480RMB... Probably should've bargained harder, but they're so cute!

Cute huh?

Cute purse I got on Taobao for less than 70RMB... Quality is great too!

Love it!

A day of shopping :)

My first time buying a romper.. Perfect for the summer.

Anna got one too.. We were soo excited when it arrived!

Anyway, I've got about two weeks left here in Changchun before heading back to Hong Kong. I'm super excited, especially since Anna and Ahmed will be swinging by for a couple of days too :) Then after that.. My summer adventure with Jacky begins!!

Eating, sleeping and shopping. That has been my routine for the past three or so weeks. It wouldn't be so sad if it weren't for the fact that in actuality, it's eating (take out), sleeping (in), and shopping (online). I've essentially been a degenerate for the past month, but all that is about to change.

At first, it was all about saving money. Last month, I decided on a whim that I'd fly Jacky over to visit me in May. That meant I'd have to save money these couple of months so that when he arrives, we'll have money to travel and shop.

That was the case, until I discovered.... Taobao. It's like, the best thing that's happened to me in a long while. It's basically a huge online market similar to eBay, except it's not limited to an auction. Anything you want to buy, you can find it on Taobao. Variety is great, and shipping is extremely cheap... Usually just 10-15 RMB ($1-2 CAD) per item, and it arrives within a week. Last night, I bought 7 tops and a bag for about $40 CAD. Life is good!! Haha.. With that said, time to show off my April haul :) Woohoo!

Gems and charms for decorating cell phones!!! So cute and cheap. I got these on campus, before I discovered that there's a far better selection on Taobao...
Nail art supplies from Taobao~

A DIY cell phone cover I made :)

Side-by-side comparison with my (store-bought) iPod touch... Crazy huh?

Cute earrings I got on campus :)

O M G. My favourite shoes everrrrrrr. I owned two pairs previously, but one of them got destroyed and the other I have yet to find... it got lost in the Ho sisters' 150+ shoe collection (not joking). So, I was more than ecstatic to find them online. I got three pairs!!! I might get a fourth pair, we'll see.
SUPER cute, super comfortable.

Lalalala~ Best investment ever.

Super cute underwater film camera I found at my favourite shop.. ONLY to find out that you can buy it on Taobao for 16 RMB ($3 CAD) -_-

OH YEAH, I ordered a bikini from Victoria's Secret! It was supposed
to arrive within 21 days, but being the super impatient and anal person I
am when it comes to shopping, I called at 22 days. Since no tracking
information was provided, they sent me a new one. How awesome would it
be if I ended up getting two bikinis? ^^ Speaking of clothing...

Lace top from campus, 25 RMB

Ahhh, I also love buying random cute things.. A pair of children's (or hand/eye coordinately-challenged) chopsticks for me and the boyfriend.

Remember the Dior travel set I got from a few posts back? The same student got me a stash of samples.. So sweet :)

I love buying nail polish! My collection of crackle polish..

Other colors I got recently :)

I haven't done nail art in forever, so I'm a bit rusty. TV + nails = best combo

Purple/green on me~

My nails yesterday.

Like my new Betsey Johnson ring?

Proof of my laziness... This is all the takeout I had in a 1.5 week period. Michel asked me, "Do you feel ashamed?" .....Thanks, NOW I do! I'm definitely not a skinny girl, but not fat either. I think for the amount of junk I eat, I'm in pretty good shape.. ;)

Caramel macchiato... been obsessed with it recently.

...and also jasmine green tea! :)

Ughhh it's been so cold lately, hence why I'm still bundled up.. I'm dying to go out in shorts and a tank top!

Hopefully by my next post, the weather will be better :) Jacky will be here May 13th. Can't wait!

I've been wanting to make this post since forever!! I'm extremely excited.. Since August of last year, Jacky and I have been planning for our next big trip. After months and months of planning, everything is *finally* confirmed. We'll be traveling to 20+ different cities in 10 countries over a 4 month period. I failed to properly document my travels last year, and I am not about to let that happen again. So, here's a blog post dedicated to our May~August travels.

We've already booked all our internal flights, tours, and accommodation. You'll be surprised to know that all of this is costing us less than $2500 CAD per person. Mind
you, I'm already in China so my flight to Asia is not included in this.
Nonetheless, that sum is still super economical keeping in mind that India alone is costing us $1000. Maybe after this I'll do a
blog post on how to travel for cheap. Hmm.. Interesting idea. But for now, here is a brief itinerary!

So, it's been nearly 4 weeks since I got back to Changchun. To be honest - I felt pretty miserable at first. I was just getting used to the comfort of being at home, and then I had to come back to the freezing cold of Northeastern China... ahh! But the feeling subsided quite quickly - I'm loving my life here now.

Imagine my surprise when I check my mail and get not one, but FIVE postcards from Jacky. From London, Berlin, Iceland, Valencia, and Zurich. He's such a sweetheart :)

Since February was Chinese New Years, I decided to do something special for my students.. I prepared red pockets for everyone, filled with foreign currencies. I have 15 classes (that's like 450 students!!), so it was a total of whopping 10 lbs :O

I got a special gift also! One of my students, Arson (awesome name, right?) got me a Christian Dior gift set. I loooove it!

On my first weekend back, we decided to go to Harbin to check out the Harbin Ice Festival. So imagine our disappointment when we arrive and find out that everything had... already melted. It was totally not our fault too, because the official website says that
the festival goes on until March! ...and we went on the first week of March
-.-

We did some sight-seeing instead.. There wasn't really much to see though.

Looks a bit like Europe, no?

It sounds pathetic, but the highlight of our trip was our pit stop at Haagen Dazs.

Mmmmm..

Anna with her cappuccino mustache :D

Mine :D

div align="center">More eye candy!!

Drooling yet?

Ahmed's

Whitley's

Streets of Harbin

Also did a bit of shopping on the weekends. I'm pretty serious about saving money this term, and I'm doing pretty well with that so far. I haven't bought a single article of clothing all month.. That's a serious feat!

...though I considered buying this cowboy hat... hahaha.

....and a lot of eating, as usual. This looks a lot like Mandarin, right? It only costs 38rmb/person for all-you-can-eat. Serious bargain.

Trying to order and eat as much as we can...

Went to KTV for the first time since I got back, and it was awesome :D

Alice & I with our newly-bought Justin Bieber posters :D

Our boss Ying came to Changchun to visit us, and he took us out to a fabulous Japanese restaurant.

Group photo of the new teachers :)
Conch! My favourite seafood :D

Sea urchin!

Eel and shrimps :D We also had sea cucumber (interesting taste) and a huge assortment of seafood. Pretty awesome.

Alright... well, more later :)

Jacky and I love New York :D So when we saw that Megabus was doing a free ticket promotion, we jumped onto it. We only got one free ticket, but the total only came to $45 for us both. Pretty good huh?

We took an overnight bus from Toronto. We left at 7pm and arrived at about 5am. There were so many cars around - It truly is the city that never sleeps...

We saw Tim Hortons!! I was so happy.

Jacky looked sooo dead after the bus ride... Hahahaha.

New York in the morning.

Jacky took me to the Burger Joint, which is cleverly hidden in the Le Parker Meridien Hotel.

It was so good! Jacky claims he saw one of the Olsen girls there once.

Nom nom nom.

Central Park.

I was happily taking pictures of geese and ducks for a good 20 minutes.. I'm such a loser LOL.

Shopping on 5th ave! Mostly just window shopping though =_=

Love it.

One of my fave shots from the trip. No idea what that is, but looks cool.

I thought this was so funny! Grannies against war.

Times Square at night... So gorgeous.

Love love love! I wanted to see the Lion King so badly, but it was double the price of Toronto at Broadway =(

We ate soo much good Japanese food. Toronto has great food, but it's seriously lacking in fine Japanese cuisine. I'm so sick of crappy all-you-can-eats.

Tuna... O m g.

Jacky took Vijay and I to a comedy club.

It was ok that night, not really my type of humour I guess.

Jacky and I at Starbucks :)

:P

Shopping! I love Century 21.

Tried cupcakes at Magnolia for the second time. The first time I tried, I had some horrible velvet something cupcake and it tasted so bad. This time I opted for something simple (vanilla) and it was amazing.

Jacky with his cupcake :D

Headed over to Marc Jacobs, and I was so happy to see that they were doing a collab with Playboy. Bought a tee and I'm lovin' it :D

More Japanese food! Our neighborhood had so much good food it's ridiculous.

Japanese ramen :D Though I gotta say, I prefer the Korean kind much more..

Decided to buy a new pair of running shoes so I can start training come September. Only $50!

Oh, and I'm back in China by the way. Been here for about a week now. We have three new teachers (Alice, Anna and Haris) and I've been getting to know everyone... Fun! More later :)

Again, another super-belated entry... After Shanghai & Xi'an, Katelyn and I went to Hong Kong... yay!! We actually flew to Shenzhen, which was significantly cheaper because you're still in the mainland. We then took a bus to cross the border to Hong Kong - it was relatively straightforward, but time-consuming. Oh well, saved us a lot of money though.

This was my first time back since my HKU exchange in 2009. I noticed some changes immediately.. I.e, the prices!! Everything got so much more expensive. A mango drink from Hui Lau San now costs 28HKD, which is almost double the price from two years ago.

Nevertheless, it was delicious - mm mmmm!

Katelyn & I had fun taking sticker pictures... Instead of just the stickers, the machine pops out false eyelashes and a mini beauty kit too :O Crazy!

I took her to Australian Dairy, which is consistently rated the #1 eatery in Hong Kong. I love it because it's so quintessentially Hong Kongnese :)

Of course, no trip to Hong Kong would suffice without a trip to the Peak. The views are simply fantastic.

Low and behold - guess what I found at the Peak..? NEW YORK FREAKIN' FRIES!!! I had been deprived of poutine for so long, I wanted to cry.

Katelyn with her very first poutine!! Yay go Canada :)

Before going to Hong Kong, Katelyn said we absolutely needed to make a stop to Macau. I said, sure, why not... Macau is famous for its casinos! Not only that, but also it's Michael Jackson tribute museum apparently. Yep, we went all the way to Macau to check it out. Being a hardcore MJ fan, she was thrilled :)

The glove! :O

Ruins of St. Paul.

Me with Macau's famous egg tart! I love the colors in these photos - I don't quite remember what settings I used though..

And of course.. a bit of gambling. Photographs were prohibited in all of the casinos, but I managed to sneak some in. I love slots :D

During the short time that Katelyn was in Hong Kong, I was really happy because I got to
be a wannabe tour guide for her :) I took her to a lot of the tourist attractions, like Stanley.

It's so serene - definitely one of my favourite spots in the city.

We had amazing Indian food at Chungking Mansions :D I kept telling her that Chungking was a really sketchy place, and I think she was a bit skeptical about it... but I'm sure in the end she agreed ;)

Muahaha... We did a lot of shopping too! We both bought a lot of Skinfood products :D Yay!

After Katelyn left, I stuck around my dad a lot.. He goes to Hong Kong every year to visit gramps. I don't have many friends in Hong Kong, so all I do in HK is just shop and eat. Pretty sad.

I had been wanting to buy a wide angle lens for some time now, so I shopped around for a good one. This was my first time using a "super" wide angle, and I was amazed at the quality...

Pretty sharp, eh?

The latest cameras in Hong Kong.. Really awesome-looking Pentax DSLRs.. I want one :O

I guess this is the new thing huh.. Personalized cameras?

I wasn't aware of the salesperson taking this photo :S But you see how wide the photo is? *in love*

Hahahaha.. If you go close up the object gets pretty distorted.. Almost like a fisheye :D

...annnnnd if you take portrait photos, it makes you look really tall. Haha!

A bus ad for the new line of Olympus cameras at Causeway Bay. Amazing.

Every camera looks freakin' awesome!!

Of course... My favourite thing in the whole wide world. Well, almost. Guess what they have at McDonald's HK? Miniature versions of the McDonalds classics!!!

They cost about 120HKD for the set. I had no more room for stupid purchases.. so I only got one. A mini filet-o-fish :D Nom nom nom...

This trip was also my first time to Disney!! Yep, you heard it.. I've never been to Disneyland before :( Like my friends warned me, the HK one is... TINY, not even 1/4 of Canada's Wonderland. The shows were great though, and I had a blast with my cousin.
Wheee!

Us with Buzz Lightyear :D

Woooooody!!!

Beautiful fireworks at night :)

I'm going back to China in less than 2 weeks! I'm sad to go, but also excited to see my friends and students again. Jacky and I will be heading off to NYC for a couple of days on the 22nd - That should be fun :)

After Shanghai, we made a quick 2-day stopover in Xi'an, home of the terracotta warriors. We had tried to go during the national holiday in October, but train tickets were sold out so we missed out on it. We were sooo extremely disappointed! :(

Butttt, we later learned that it was actually a blessing in disguise. Apparently at the time, everything was so packed that you were only allowed a quick glimpse of the warriors. I would have been devastated if that were the case!

On our first day, we ventured out into the Muslim quarters. We were all really surprised to see a lot of ethnic Chinese people in traditional Muslim wear selling Muslim street food. Phew.. that was a long one. Anyway, it's a shame we didn't get to try any of it though.

We visited a local mosque... We seriously would not have known it was one though, because of the architecture. It might as well have been a Buddhist shrine.

At night, we checked out a Tang dynasty music & dance show. Pretty interesting.

The female dancers were absolutely stunning. The costumes are gorgeous!

Our second day was really busy. We booked a full day tour that included visiting a neolithic village, the much-anticipated terracotta warriors, lunch, the first emperor's mausoleum and then the Big Goose pagoda.

This is a creepy photo of some of the earliest records of life in China.

Finally.. the terracotta warriors! I've been wanting to visit since I was a kid, and I was so glad to be there. Below is a photo of one of the farmers who discovered the warrior remnants. We bought postcards so we could take a photo with him -_-

The warriors were found in shards and pieces, and each one takes approximately 2.5 years to piece back together. Below is a warrior that was pieced together and put on display for the museum.

The terracotta army consisted of soldiers, horses, chariots and weapons.

Wheee! :) Group photo in front of the biggest exhibit of the warriors.

Every single warrior has distinct facial features and/or hairstyles. There are approximately 8,000 of them in total, but the majority of them have not either been excavated or/nor pieced back together.

Anddd another one!

Overall, it was an amazing trip - short and sweet! In my opinion, two days is more than enough to see the tourist-y areas of the city. Check out my flickr for more photos from Xi'an!

I meant to do a "year in review" post last month, but I got soo lazy.. It's ok, I'll do one as soon as I get home and I'll backdate it. Anyway, things have been craaaazy! Ahmed, his sister Dena, Katelyn & I flewto Shanghai to spend the new year. I was in Shanghai for a month back in 2007, and I absolutely loved the city. I still enjoyed it this time around, but it wasn't the same.. I guess nothing really tops the first time of something amazing. It gets pretty cold in December, so we were all freezing our asses off.

Day 1

Katelyn and I arrived to Shanghai first. We only had half a day, so we basically just walked around and scoped out the area we were living in...

The gorgeous Pearl Tower.
Expo 2010~ Too bad we missed it.
We had sooo much Starbucks...
I was so excited to find a A390 in Shanghai! It's basically an airplane-themed restaurant chain from Taiwan, but it wasn't the same :(
The interior.. Pretty cool huh?

Day 2

Ahmed and Dena still hadn't arrived yet, so Katelyn and I checked out M50, which is an arts district in some obscure part of the city.

It had lots of cool graffiti :D Doraemon!!
Had amazing sushi :D Haven't had it in soo long...
Ahmed and Dena finally arrived! Yay... We went to O'Malley's to check out the weekly pub crawl, but it was pretty dead 'cause it was the day before New Year's eve.. Oops.

Day 3

Katelyn had gotten sick in the morning/night before, so Ahmed, Dena and I went to check out the Yu gardens. I had been already back in 2007, and I loved it. It's so beautiful, and there are a lot of handicraft stalls to check out.

Ahmed and his Haagen Dazs craze -.-

A lot of crafts to buy for cheap~
Ahmed & Dena in the gardens.
After a couple hours, Katelyn joined us along with my cousin Steven and his girlfriend. We had amazing shao long bao (pork buns).. Mmmm mmm!

That night, we went to M1NT to celebrate New Year's Eve... I didn't bring my clunky camera, so I'm gonna have to steal Katelyn's photos. The club was amazing, I hadn't seen so many good-looking people in a hell of a long time. The club was way high class, and everyone was dressed really well. The interior was amazing, the club even had a hugeass shark tank!

Day 4

Ahmed & Dena.. new year's photo :)

Katelyn & I. We don't look that tired, do we? ;)
We brought Ahmed & Dena to the Bund, and we took a bunch of photos of the Shanghai skyline.
We went to check out Dongtai Street, which is an antique market. We loved it! Katelyn & Dena both got some souvenirs.

I managed to get some interesting photos from that market.. Check out my flickr! :)

The last thing I remember doing in Shanghai is standing outside in the blistering cold trying to capture the "I ♥ Shanghai" slogan on one of the buildings. After waiting for what seemed like forever, we were finally successful. We do love Shanghai :D

Another post about Xi'an and Hong Kong/Macau coming soooon! xx
