    First couple weeks in China

| | Comments (0)

After a brief week in Toronto, I had to fly out to Changchun, China. For the past year or so, I've been unsure as to what to do after my travels. Luckily, I had gotten a one-year scholarship to study Chinese at Tsinghua University in Beijing. I was quite pleased because 1) I've always wanted to improve my Chinese, 2) I want to try living in the Mainland, and 3) Tsinghua is a great school.

In early June, I got a job offer to teach English at Changchun Normal University. I was so torn! To be a student again... or a teacher? But after a lot of thinking, I decided to turn down the scholarship and accept the 6-month teaching contract. Now here I am!

My first Engrish encounter at the Changchun airport. Oh, "Changchun" means "Long spring" in English. It's a huge misnomer as there is absolutely NO spring and NO fall here.

I arrived September 9th. I had trouble adjusting at first, but I really love it here now. They gave me an apartment for free, and it's so nice and spacious!

Lounge-ish area?

My huge bedroom. Foreign teachers get a lot of special privileges. Apparently, the local teachers have to share 4 people to a room! Ouch..

The worst feature would have to be the bathroom. I don't like open showers, but I've gotten used to it. That huge thing is the unnecessarily complicated washing machine, which I have yet to use..

I didn't think I'd experience much culture shock, but oh boy. The school system here is pretty different. For the longest time, I got woken up at 5:30am everyday because of.......THIS:

Omg. Freshmen students have an obligatory one-month military training. Everyday from 5:30am until 9pm. All the chanting was driving me NUTS...

I've been here for a little under 3 weeks. I thought I'd be some sort of assistant, but apparently not. I actually teach the students on my own. Wow, I know. I was really shocked because I'm the same age as some of the students... I thought they'd disrespect me for that reason, but my classes have been amazing so far.

The students don't have showers in their dorm. If they want to shower, they have to pay 5RMB (80cents) to use the public bathhouse. It's not expensive for us, but that's equivalent to a meal here. They're not allowed to use blowdryers in their dorms either. Again, the bathhouses offer it for 1RMB. Ridiculous.

So, when they want clean water for washing their face/hands they have to buy and save it in a thermos. Here's my friend using a debit card type of thing to get water.

In the dining halls, they have mass-sanitizing chopstick devices. LOL.

"Intense" and "stimulating" Lays chips. Numb & spicy hot pot flavor!

Hot & sour fish soup flavor... Mmmm.

The school gave all the teachers mooncakes for Mid-Autumn Festival!

Me and a random Chinese kid at a restaurant. I totally photobombed him..

Took a trip downtown, and was surprised to find out that street vendors actually sell live animals! The most popular pets for sale are tiny puppies, kittens, rabbits, and hamsters. Here's Katelyn with some adorable puppies!

A super cute kitten I wanted to buy.

And a cute puppy!

Whitley (another foreign teacher), me, Ford and Ruth at a German bar.

Group photo!

My students know that I'm a Cantonese speaker, so they invited me to a Cantonese student gathering. I felt right at home...

We played a bunch of games.. Since it was Mid-Autumn festival, the loser had to eat mooncakes. We were all soo stuffed afterwards...

Me with squid balls! I love street food.

Honestly, I have so much to say but I don't want to post a loaded entry. We have our National Holiday coming up, and we have about two weeks off. I'll be going to Beijing with Ahmed and Katelyn, two other foreign English teachers. I'm sooo excited for that!

    Egypt & Toronto

Hey, I'm averaging a post per day! Not bad.. Haha. Well, that definitely won't be happening in the next couple of months. Now that I'm working, I have a lot less time on my hands. I don't want to be blogging that often anyway...

So, after Turkey I flew to Egypt and spent a couple days there. I've always been passionate about Egyptian history, so I've wanted to visit since I was a child. My dream was finally coming true! Gahhh I can't begin to explain how excited I was.

Seriously, I wanted to cry when I stood in front of the pyramids. Everything felt so surreal..

OK, but I gotta admit... Camel rides are freakin' unpleasant. And overly priced. My body ached the whole way through.. I look happy in the photo, but seriously, never again!

I know there's more to Egypt than pyramids. But it was seriously the highlight..

Again, I look all smiles... but if it weren't for the fact that I LOVE Egyptian history, I dunno if I'd be alive. I'm such a wuss when it comes to hot weather (40+ degrees!!)

For those who follow me on Facebook, you'll know that I'm absolutely obsessed with trying McDonald's in different countries... But you know what else I love to do?

Watching movies in the countries that they were set in! Especially Disney. For example, I watched Lion King in South Africa. Hunchback of Notre Dame in Paris. Prince of Egypt in Cairo. It definitely gives new meaning to the movies I had once loved as a child!

Anyway, that about summarizes my trip! It was a crazy journey.. America--> Europe--> Africa--> Europe--> Asia--> Africa--> home! As much as I enjoyed it, I was soo happy to be home, albeit for a week. I missed my family, friends, and poutine very dearly.

...which was why the first thing I did was eat poutine at Smoke's!!

Had sushi with my family! Man, I missed authentic Asian food.

Pops and Jocey.

Starbucks at a reasonable price!! (I was so desperate to have Starbucks in Austria, I got a frap for 8USD... Omg, never again). But anyway, I've had this shirt for a billion years but never took a pic posing with an actual Starbucks drink...

Random cute thing my sister did. Her alarm clock didn't work and she wanted me to wake her up at 7:00am. Before she went to bed, she had changed her mind to 6:30am. This was her way of letting me know:

On my laptop.

On my desk.

On the bathroom mirror.

On the Biosilk she KNEW I was going to use. Hahaha...

Anyway, while I was in Germany, I learned how to cook some dishes... Wanted to try my hand at making curry at home. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't spicy at all.. Fail?

Okay, so I'm almost caught up! Nearly there. Most of you know that I'm in Changchun, China right now... Been here for the past two weeks. Loving it! I promise I'll make a post about that soon!

    Europe 2010

After our South Africa trip, we flew to Europe and stayed for two months. I traveled with Jacky for the most part, but he left for Switzerland mid-August. Afterwards, I traveled with my new friend Maria before going to Turkey by myself. On to the photos!

Flew back to Spain for a week in Barcelona. Great food, excellent nightlife. Loved it!
Oh, and I also discovered my love for Magnum icecream bars...

Took the train to Pamplona for the San Fermín festival. Stayed up all night in the blistering cold for a good spot to watch the running of the bulls. Was the 14-hour wait worth the 10-sec flash before us? Hmm...

Off to Paris we went :) It was so gorgeous!

Us in front of the tiny Mona Lisa.

Next stop: 5 weeks in Neuberg, Germany for Camp Adventure, an international sports/language camp :)

(P.S. If you didn't notice earlier, my hair is now black. Lawl)

Did a lot of crazy fun activities...

...Not to mention cooking for 200 kids. NOT easy!

Spent some good time Munich, since it was only an hour drive away.

After Germany, I met up with Maria (new friend from camp) in Vienna, Austria. We went crazy in Swarovski!

It was a romantic city...

We went to Rome too! Too bad it was so... hot...

Flew to Turkey for a full week of solo adventure. Had an amazing time shopping at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul.

Overnight bus to the ancient city of Ephesus.

Overnight bus to Pamukkale, a city famous for its calcium terraces.

Final stop in Cappadocia... Simply gorgeous scenery.

Went on a hot air balloon! Honestly, the best place in the world to do it. It was hella expensive for a 1-hour ride... But it was amaaazing :)

More photos and another entry coming soon! My trip to Egypt and how I spent my interim week back home in Toronto. Man, I'm really, really behind...

    2010 SOUTH AFRICA WORLD CUP

| | Comments (0)

Okay, so I'm back on my blog, for several reasons:
  1. Tumblr isn't really cut for my typical long-winded, photo-loaded posts.
  2. Been using this blog for two years now. Shouldn't stop now.
  3. Still paying for this damn service, so I better make the best out of it.
With that said... It's been a looong time! I've been away from home for quite some time now. Jacky and I embarked on our summer adventure in June, with the highlight of it being... the 2010 South Africa World Cup!

It was the craziest, most exciting 3 weeks of my life. We watched a total of 6 matches in 5 cities (Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria). We wanted to save money, so we didn't fly... Instead, we took overnight buses between the host cities. Total distance was 2279km. Crazy.

The matches were awesome, but we were also lucky to experience shark cage diving, safari game viewing, try different foods (crocodile meat!), oh... and not to mention a near-death experience in Johannesburg.

It's nearly impossible to understand what it's like being there.. But, I'll try my best with these photos:

We started off by taking the bus to New York. We got customized England tees/jerseys :D

Flew to Madrid for a full day stopover. Checked out the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Nearly 48 hours later, finally arrived at the Johannesburg airport! :) Soo happy to be there.

At the England vs. Algeria match.

We saw Steve Nash at the game! We were soo excited. Lucky to have snapped this photo ;)

Did a tour of the Cape Peninsula. Did you know that Africa has penguins? Omg I was totally psyched.

Got to see so much wildlife :D

Cape Town is soo gorgeous.

Shark cage diving! So exhilarating. Too bad I puked three times during... Oh boy. That's a story for another day.

We got to see a cheetah close up at one of three safaris we visited :)

Me with cheetahhh!

Took a 10+ hour bus ride to Port Elizabeth. Us at the England vs. Slovenia match.

10+ hour bus ride to Port Elizabeth. Me with a mini vuvuzela at the Brazil vs. Portugal match :D

14 hour bus ride to Johannesburg. Us all decked out for the Argentina vs. Mexico match :D

Us at the Brazil vs. Chile game.

Vijay drove us to Pretoria for the Japan vs. Paraguay game!

Me with a lion cub. Love this pic!

Jacky feeding a giraffe!

We bumped into the Ghana team at Sun City :D

I'll be blogging again soon with photos from our Europe adventure! Stay tuned :)
