Only in Hong Kong!

| | Comments (1)
So, it's been over a month since I've arrived in Hong Kong... The region is pretty Westernized, plus it's not my first time here, so a lot of the culture doesn't really come as a shock to me. But, there are some.... bemusing things. I came up with a lot, but here's my attempt at truncation:

1. McDelivery
mcdelivery.JPG
Pretty self-explanatory. Could you imagine how fat Canadians would be if this existed back home?

2. Dessert places everywhere! (this is a good thing :D)

desserts.JPG
Why don't they have dessert shops at home? Like, every other block? Life is unfair :(

3. But after the desserts, they'll guilt you with their "subliminal' messages
subliminal messages.JPG
Uh huh. There are weight loss ads everywhere... I've actually stopped at several of them and seriously considered joining one of their programs. All the ads are like "120 lbs to 90 lbs! You can do it!" If they advertised like that back home, I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing lawsuit after lawsuit.... Anyway, Hong Kong girls are too skinny.

4. "Friendly" toilet reminders
friendly reminders.JPG
It's like we're back in grade school again. Why do Hong Kong people constantly need these reminders?

5. Unnecessary life endangerment
Actually, I can kinda sympathize with jaywalkers. I'm not unreasonable. If you're in a hurry, okay, go ahead and jaywalk. I do it sometimes too. But this is bewildering to me:
jaywalking.JPG
I really don't understand why people cross the street, knowing that you won't make it to the other side... You just end up standing there looking like an idiot. Know that you aren't gonna get to your destination any quicker, you know.

6. Hall culture
I didn't realize it until recently, but all the residential halls have a unique "culture". My hallmates do a lot of interesting things, like the following...
flushing express.JPG
Do you know what "Flushing Express" is? It's a neat sheet of paper, taped conveniently beside the toilet for hallmates to leave messages to each other when they're going number 1 or number 2. Mostly number 2 though.

Alright, so I'm gonna leave it at that. I didn't realize that most of the entry consists of just.... ranting. Don't get me wrong though, I love Hong Kong. But, I think it's also really healthy to compare where you are at the moment to your life back at home. It helps you appreciate your hometown that much more. Plus, I think it's ridiculous when people think that Hong Kong is "omg, the best place in the world!!!111". All cultures have their flaws, and you're just in denial if you think a certain place is "perfect".

Anyway, on to other things. How about a nail art spam? If you remember from my last post, I had a French manicure....

I got bored of it precisely after 2 days, and switched to this:

But then I realized it looks like someone took a hammer and pounded on my poor hands. So I changed to just a solid, turquoise-blue colour.

In case you forgot what I looked like (haha)...

Good news: my skin has been clearing up! (FYI: above photo has not been edited). I owe it to great lighting and my new Skinfood products:

I am currently using their cleansing gel, water drop essence, make-up remover, overnight mask, bb cream (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!), toner, spot gel, make-up... Wow, a lot.

Hmmm, what else... I've been spending a lot of time with my cousins. Here's a repost of some of my Facebook photos:

I went to my 2nd high table dinner... My roommate Janet and I (She's so pretty--Did I mention that she's Taiwanese/HK?)

I've been shopping (surprise surprise)...

...and I got my eyelashes done today!

I was disappointed with the result. It looks too natural (you think I'm crazy right?) But it cost me so much... $60CAD just to look like I have naturally long eyelashes? I dunno. But I don't really like it that much. I prefer a more exaggerated look.

And lastly... The boyfriend has been wanting me to post our photos... But how can I when we don't even have any recent ones? D:

(Jacky: How is this?)

That was a long entry... I won't be updating for about... the next two weeks or so. 'Cause I'll be riding elephants in Thailand and suntanning in Boracay, the Philippines! Wish me a safe trip! :)

Guess who I saw the other day?

JANICE MAN.

Isn't my life great? Hahaha. I can die happy now, knowing that I've seen one of two of my idols (the other being her "friend"/archrival Angelababy). Is she as pretty in real life as she is in photos? Is she skinny? Is she friendly? Yes, yes, and yes.

It was Valentine's Day. I was honestly having the crappiest day ever, feeling totally lonely 'cause I was shopping by myself while waiting for friends... All I see are hordes of girls with their boyfriends holding onto huge bouquets of roses and/or wearing matching shirts/LVs/trucker hats OR... all of the above.

They call it Singles' Awareness Day, but I think it's also Overseas Bf/Gf Awareness Day :( Okay, so I'll stop blabbing and post the photos.

Stupid fanboys made my ears bleed.

Yup, so that's about the single most exciting event of the week. I did a lot of shopping, but that's almost become a habit now. I splurged at Playboy the other day...
DSC04069.JPGI love how in Hong Kong, there isn't any social stigma attached to the brand. Here, it's just a cute bunny. Back at home, people will wonder the x or xx number of guys you've slept with. Ah, I love HK :)

Speaking of which, school is fun. I can't believe I said that... But it is. How often do you get to watch porn in class... as a class? I'm not kidding.

We watched porn in class. (Bolded, italicized, and underlined for emphasis)
DSC04071.JPG
It was for my Japanese/HK pop culture class. It was a lecture on Japanese pornographic culture... and for the "pursuit of knowledge" as my professor so brilliantly put it, he decided it would be of educational value to show a porn in class. That's not the end of it. This week, he's inviting an AV director to come speak to us. Topic? "How to make a porn".... Life is great.

I realized I haven't talked much about residence life. So I will. Needless to say, it's a lot different from back home. People don't sleep. They don't go to class (often, at least). They're super hardcore about extra-curriculars though. I joined the drama team, and my first practice is tomorrow.... at midnight. Seriously. I'm also a part of the jazz team, and we have practices about 3 times a week, 3 hours each. Uh huh. HK students take "well-rounded" to the next level...

I got a job! Two (or three) to be exact... as a research assistant with a psych prof. I'm also tutoring English on the side. Hopefully I'll make enough money to fund my travels. Thailand and the Philippines next week!!!

My nails at the moment.
DSC04124.JPG
Just a simple French manicure. I have two job interviews this week... Any other nail design would have been career suicide. I was gonna make a tutorial for it, but then I thought it'd be pointless. French manicures are a basic skill.... right? Like applying mascara and French braiding. I don't really understand why some girls spend $30+ getting a French manicure at the salon. IMO, such a waste of money... and half the time, it comes out just about the same as if I were to DIY it.

I'm vain.
OMG lighting so good.JPG...but so are you. :) :)

I'm trying to lose weight. What better encouragement to shed the pounds than to publicly announce it? Currently, I'm roughly 110lb, give or take a couple (depending on the accuracy of Ikea scales). I don't really care about the actual weight per se, I just want to look and feel thinner. Hence joining the jazz team. I'll blog more about my process later.... Gotta go to dance practice now :)

Nail tutorial no. 1

| | Comments (2)
This is an original design, and also my first tutorial... It took a lot of time and effort, so I hope it's actually helpful to some of you. :) If you have any questions, feel free to ask.... But please don't hot-link or take this out of my blog!

Note: You can choose whatever colors you want for this design. However, I suggest picking complementary colors (e.g. green and purple) so that the design doesn't look like it clashes. Black and white will also look good with anything.
